‘Autothane’ is a high-performance microcellular elastomer with a closed cell structure. Even in the most demanding context of an F1 race where it is given the most exhaustive of work-outs, this polyurethane form stands repeated compressing and return to its original shape. Suppressing and absorbing shock and vibration as it does so, and improving overall the ride profile of the vehicle, it demonstrates the inherent dynamism of this Hyperlast engineered material. “The ‘Autothane’ components have proven durability under the stress caused by high heat and loads,” commented Tony Boardman the Autothane Technical Support Manager. In addition to excellent hydrolytic stability and exceptional dampening properties, ‘Autothane’ shows excellent resistance to chemicals, grease and ozone. ‘Autothane’ is also impervious to microbial attack, and, of necessity within its mechanically harsh working environment, it resists the action of water, salt, oils, and fuels. It must also remain unaffected by and perform in extremes of ambient temperature as well as extremes of climate. “It’s a safer, smoother ride because this highly engineered polyurethane works to isolate road noise and vibration”, Tony Boardman added. In addition to its huge following of F1 fans, the team can look forward also to the support of Hyperlast Limited, the Peak District (UK) based company and polyurethane engineering excellence behind the product, which is also used globally in the production car market.
